In SPN, the boys use African dreamroot and the 'dreamer's' DNA (in this case, Lucifer's semen) to enter their dreams. I didn't want to reveal his plan too early so was probably too subtle. Once there, they can turn bad dreams good, and good dreams bad. Had I more words, I would have described things in a lot more detail.
Basically, Sam wanted to show Lucifer that he could stalk him and that he wasn't afraid of him, when in fact Sam was terrified of being the Devil's true vessel and knowing Lucifer could and would just bring him back if he killed himself . He knew he couldn't beat Lucifer in Real Life but in his dreams he would be more of an equal and a definite threat.
