Sam leaned back against the hard wood behind him. The air smelled like salt and the sounds of creaking mixed with the more faint sound of waves crashing against the side of the ship. He had been trying to keep track of time but it was difficult. He couldn’t see the changing light of day and night so the best he could do was try to gauge the time. His best estimate was that he had been hiding away in the supply hold of the large ship for a few days. Hiding in the near dark gave him plenty of time to contemplate his decision.
At the time it had seemed like such a good plan. He had met a man, a ‘sailor’ who was passing through the port town. He had only known the man for a week, but it had been enough to make him decide he couldn’t bear the thought of letting Dean slip away from his life forever. And that is exactly what Dean had tried to do. Sam had woken up in the dead of night when Dean tried to sneak away unnoticed, Sam had feigned sleep and then silently followed Dean to his ship. He had decided his best option was the become a stowaway, remove any possibility that Dean might say no to his plan to join him. He had decided to wait until they were out to sea before revealing himself.
The proceeding days had given him nothing but time to think over his impulsive decision, but his resolve was no less than the day he had left home. The sound of footsteps grew louder and his heart began to race as he heard the creaking that indicated someone was climbing down the ladder into the hold where Sam was hidden. He stood up and straightened his dirty clothes out as best he could.
Anticipation took him as he saw the figure approaching him. He felt a small sense of relief as he saw that the man he was face to face with was Dean himself.
“What a surprise, a stowaway.” The other man said in a flat tone.
“You don’t sound surprised,” Sam said, at a loss for anything else to say. He had planned on revealing his presence on his terms, and he had been expecting a more dramatic encounter.
Dean contemplated him for a long moment before speaking again, “You can’t get much by me. If you were so intent on coming with me, you could have just asked.”
“You might have said no.”
“I might have said yes.”
“It doesn’t matter now, we’re too far out to sea for you to send me home.”
“I could make you walk the plank, let the sharks take care of our stowaway,” Dean’s tone was casual as if throwing him into the sea was a simple matter to him.
“Then do it. I don’t care, I’d rather die than go home anyway.” His voice was calm and he held his head high, unwilling to be cowed.
“Is that so? And what’s so terrible about your life and that you can’t stand to go back?” Dean asked, seemingly genuinely curious.
“It was boring. I was the apprentice of a clock maker. I was to spend years learning the trade so that I could ultimately I could work making clocks until I am old enough and proficient enough to have my own apprentice. I couldn’t do it, work every day doing the same thing watching my life tick away. I want something more. When I met you I knew it might be my only chance to live a life worth something, and I couldn’t just let you leave. If I walk the plank, at least that will be an adventure. I’d rather live a short exciting life than long tedious one.”
Dean let out a soft breath, “you certainly paint a bleak picture. But being a pirate isn’t all roses and swordfights, it’s a lot of work. You could be a liability. It would be easier to just drop you off at the next port and call it a day.” Dean spoke softly, as if talking to himself. Sam held his breath as he waited to see what conclusion Dean would come to.
“If I let you stay, Captain Benny won’t be too happy with me. It won’t be as easy to convince him to let you stay. If I’m going to agree to this, you’re going to have to make it worth my while.”
“I’m sure I can think of something.”
A wicked smile curved Dean’s lips, “I’m sure you can.”
Sam felt like a weight had been lifted from him, he felt lighter, in that moment, than he had for years. He could see his life stretching out before him, a life of adventure awaited him with Dean by his side. And couldn’t have been happier.
