Title: Stars in the Sky (And Questions Why)
Pairing: Jared/Jensen

Any warnings: strong language, gore

He was told to stay away from the scrap metal yard dozens of times, and Jensen—his best friend and boyfriend—had been told the same.

They were told by their parents, by the cranky owner who caught them sneaking in twice already, and by the myriad of warning signs that littered the fence. But saying no to a teenager is like trying to stop a hurricane and anyway, this was the last time.

Honest.

They were so close to finishing their epic sci-fi/fantasy flick for the local film festival; all they needed was a flying saucer and Jared spotted the perfect prop on his way home from school. It took him less than three seconds to formulate a plan. Get in, grab it, and get out. Piece of cake. They might even have time to fool around a little before curfew, and that would be the cherry on top.

He gave Jensen a boost over the fence and then quickly hopped it himself. His sneakers hit the dirt with a light thud and as he pulled his flashlight from his backpack he heard Jensen ask, “Where’d you see it?”

“Over there,” He said, flipping the light on. The beam darted over tall piles of junk and stopped on the rusted out dome of a grill. It perched precariously at the top of a pile and what was left of the silver surface glinted beneath the light. He heard Jensen snort.

“That?” He said. “It’s seen better days, man.”

“We can touch it up.”

“Sure,” Jensen said dubiously. “But still. How’re we going to reach it?”

“Easy.” He slipped his backpack off. Tossed it at Jensen along with the flashlight and then strode bravely toward the pile. Behind him, Jensen fumbled with the items. The beam swung wildly around the yard and finally steadied.

“Jay!” He protested. “Don’t. We can knock it down with something or… I don’t know. Just don’t…”

“Chill,” Jared said, cutting him off. He paused at the edge of the pile and looked back. Jensen’s face was knit partially with concern, partially with irritation. The combination was familiar and Jared smile fondly as he assured him, “I’ve got this.”

He turned back and cautiously began to scale the pile. It rocked beneath his weight and he could hear Jensen squawk a nervous, “Careful!”

Ok, maybe this hadn’t been the best idea. The pile wasn’t nearly as sturdy as he thought and multiple items broke beneath his palms when he tried to grab them for support. But he was already halfway up and there was no backing down now. He imagined waving he dome in Jensen’s face. In his mind he could hear how Jensen would call him and idiot. How he would smack his arm a couple of times and then finally give in, kissing him with relief. How he’d lick up into Jared’s mouth and fist his hands in his shaggy hair.

And that was what he looked forward to more than anything.

The dome was within reach now, hovering just a few feet away. He extended his arm and grabbed for it, but was still a few inches short. He carefully stepped up onto an old barrel. He reached again and grasped the dome. Pulled it toward himself and was about to whoop triumphantly, only…

The barrel broke. Cracked and shattered beneath his sneaker.

He stumbled and was overwhelmed by the sensation of falling. Tumbling backwards as dozens of items crashed down alongside him.

His shoulder hit the ground first. Or rather, hit the landing of the pile which was littered with various pieces. His arm connected with something. It sliced painfully into his skin and his first thought was, My mom is going to kill me. Only he’d have to be alive for her to kill him, and that was when he felt the pressure in his neck. He couldn’t breathe. He was choking and as his eyes trailed downward he saw the tail end of a pipe—jagged at the tip and stained with blood—protruding upward. Piercing his neck.

He heard the flurry of, “Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit,” as Jensen rushed to his side. His sneakers skidded to a halt and Jared could hear him saying, “I can fix this, I can fix this,” over and over. Now, he wasn’t normally a pessimist—and maybe it had a little something to do with the fucking pipe sticking out of his fucking neck—but he honestly didn’t see how Jensen could fix this.

Everything was becoming foggy. Blurred around the edges, but he tried to focus on Jensen. He leaned into his line of vision, face contorted with panic, and Jared tried to memorize every detail. The freckles that smattered the bridge of his nose, the green of his eyes, and the fading mark on his lip from where he’d accidentally bit him.

These were the things he saw before everything went black.

::

At seventeen years old, Jared hadn’t given much thought to how he would die.

He was mainly concerned with finishing this movie, hearing back from the schools he’d applied to, and trying to figure out if it was too girly to give Jensen flowers for their one year anniversary (which was coming up next week). In short, he was happy, healthy, and had a lot of living left to do.

At least, he thought he did.

He wasn’t sure what to expect when he opened his eyes. Heaven or a hospital. He favored the latter, obviously, but if it was the former… well, he’d cross that bridge in a few seconds so might as well get it over with.

He cracked an eye. All he could see was a dark sky glittering with stars and—turning his head to the left—he noticed the pile of discarded refrigerators and stoves. If this was heaven, it looked an awful lot like the scrap metal yard.

He drew his hands upward. Touched his throat and felt nothing but clean, undaunted skin.

“What the fuck,” He muttered. His voice was hoarse and he had a dull headache, but otherwise he felt… fine. Which was admittedly awesome, but didn’t make an ounce of sense.

Something shifted underneath him. Tugged at his hair a little and he realized his head was pillowed on Jensen’s lap. Fingers thread through his hair, he looked down at Jared and smiled weakly.

“Hi,” He said.

Jared sat up. Groaned a little and asked, “What happened?”

“You fell.”

“No shit.”

“And… I helped you.”

Jared stared at him. Squinted a little and gestured to his neck. “There was…” He trailed off. Shook his head and tried again. “There’s no way… not without…” He couldn’t make heads or tails of what had happened.

Jensen lowered his gaze to the ground. “I healed you,” He said quietly. “You were going to die. It must’ve nicked an artery and… there was so much blood, Jay.”

Jared looked down and saw he was wearing Jensen’s hoodie. His own t-shirt was balled up a few feet away, stained red. His stomach churned a little and he choked out a startled, “Oh.” It was all he could manage. He lifted his hand and massaged his neck once more. He could still see it. Feel it.

“You healed me,” He dully.

His voice sounded distant. Blurry. He thought maybe saying the words aloud would help him make sense of it all, but it didn’t. His head continued to whir. A flurry of thoughts and questions.

“I don’t know if I’m human,” He heard Jensen say. “I can… do things. Things I shouldn’t be able to. Things no one should be able to.”

“What are you talking about?” He asked, turning his gaze back. He felt off balance. Like he was dreaming, but he knew he wasn’t.

Jensen drew his legs up toward his chest and rested his chin on his knee. He met Jared’s eye. “I don’t know what’s happening to me,” He said quietly. “But when I saw you there I knew I could save you. In my mind, it all came together like pieces of a puzzle. It made sense and… I pulled the pipe out. I touched you and… it worked. Ligaments fused, skin reformed…” He shook his head.

“Let me get this straight,” Jared said. “You saw me with a pipe through my fucking neck and your first thought wasn’t to call 911?”

“It worked, didn’t it?” Jensen snapped. His tone was quiet but stern. He closed his eyes for a moment and softly added, “I can’t explain it, but it worked.”

“So it did,” Jared murmured.

He rubbed at his neck again and looked back to Jensen, who hugged his knees a little tighter. His lips were pursed in a tight line and he looked … well, he looked terrified.

Jared had known him since he was four years old. He’d seen him through the deaths of family members, of pets. He’d seen him through coming out to his parents and going to their first dance together. And never had he seen him look so frightened. It made his heart break a little and he scooted closer. Wrapped his arms around Jensen’s shoulders and drew him in.

“I’m scared,” Jensen mumbled. Jared drew a short, calculated breath. He smoothed Jensen’s hair and then placed a small kiss against his temple.

“Me too,” He whispered. “Me too.”

Ooh, this is so intriguing! I really like the relationship you built up between the two of them in such a short fic. :)

Hmmm, this was incredibly interesting. To be honest, I reacted to Jared's 'piercing' with a burst of laughter - I kind of viewed this initially from a black comedy, Murphy's law perspective. I liked Jared's voice, the glimpses we had of his character and the guys' relationship. And then the tone shifted, and I have to say when the absurdity lifted, and we were left with a frightened pair of teenage boys, I was captivated and left wishing for more. An original take on the Superhero device; it kind of reminded me of the film Chronicle - highly recommended - which offered a startlingly fresh, morbid superpowers story in a way similar to this.

I know, it was a little ridiculous and to be honest I kept going back and forth on his injury should be. I needed something life-threatening and then the deadline came to turn the fic in so I left it at this. I'm glad you liked it, either way. :)

Wow, I'm really curious as to what these prompts were! This was really neat; great work. It sort of reminded me of this Super 8-esque feel, touched with, haha, the supernatural rather than the extraterrestrial.

It's funny that you mention Super 8 because given the prompt I was working with I was this close to writing a Super 8-esque AU but then I changed directions. LOL. I'm glad you liked this, though. :)

Wow, this is absolutely amazing. I didn't see the reveal in the second part coming at all. I thought that maybe Jared had lost consciousness during the fall and the part with the pipe was his imagination or something like that. But I loved your conclusion way more than mine :D. Also, the ending is very, very intriguing and leaves me wishing for more.

I wasn't expecting that twist! Very sweet relationship between the boys; I love in the end that they're both comforting each other. :)

Great job!

I really liked this! I love that you didn't shy away from giving Jared a serious injury and that you hinted at how awful and terrifying having mysterious powers would be for Jensen.

He had a broken leg at one point during the process, but I needed something a little more life-threatening to bring Jensen's powers out. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
