At nearly twenty-five, Jensen is starting to realize that being a teacher isn’t exactly what he thought it would be back when he was still in college.
First of all, the middle school he teaches for is in a crappy Chicago neighborhood, and though the kids aren’t the minigangsters that every cliché story or report on Fox News tells you they are, they’re not exactly saints either, far from it--Jensen still remembers the day that one of them threatened to kick his ‘lily-white ass’ when he caught him smoking pot in the teacher’s restroom between classes--and there are mornings when Jensen really, really wants to call in sick and stay in the warmth of his bed.
The school budget is so ridiculously low too, and Jensen has to buy a lot of things himself for his class, if not everything, and even though it embarrasses him to no end, he’s glad his parents keep sending him a little bit of money each month because his pay alone wouldn’t allow him to keep the fridge full.
He can't afford to buy himself a new car after the death of his old one, so twice a day he's stuck to forty-minute-long rides on a train that has seen better days, leaving Chicago for the far cheaper suburbia area and the nice apartment he’s renting with another guy who works... well, Jensen doesn’t know what Misha does for a living; he’s like Chandler Bing, no one knows what his job is exactly.
So, yeah, it’s not always easy, but in the end it’s alright because Jensen loves these kids to death--the feeling isn’t always reciprocal but it’s okay, he’s learned to deal with it--and he can’t see himself doing anything else. Besides, he’s kind of glad that he’s totally broke and has to spend hours and hours in a fucking train because he would never have met Jared otherwise.
Jared is a total dork and he can babble your ears off about anything at anytime of the day--even and especially when Jensen himself is barely awake yet and wishes nothing more than to be asleep or to have a giant cup of coffee in his hands like all other normal people in the universe--but somehow Jensen finds himself drawn to the always-in-a-good-mood guy. It might be because of the dimples. Or the smiling eyes. Or the fluffy hair. Or the bulging muscles in his arms as he flails them around when he talks with his deep, smooth voice. Yeah, Jensen has a crush and he knows it, so shut up already okay?
“ - so in the end I told him he could shove it real deep up his ass and to stop calling me. Though now that I think about it, he probably would enjoy it so... Hey, Jensen, are you even listening to me?”
Jensen blinks and feels his cheeks heating up with the embarrassment of being called on his distraction. Jared’s phone rings, giving him a few precious seconds to find something to say during the time it takes for Jared to reject the call.
“You see? He’s calling again, the asshole.”
“The asshole,” Jensen repeats dumbly, nodding a little bit to emphasize the point.
“So like I told you, now that we’re done for real I think I’m gonna go back to law school in the fall, and maybe travel to India for a two or three months before that,” Jared then says, and wow, Jensen did miss a good chunk of the conversation because he doesn’t remember anything even remotely close to Jared leaving to the other side of the world for months.
“Wait, what? India? Do you have to go that far away? And for that long?” And fuck if he doesn’t sound like a whiny five-year-old but hey, he really doesn’t want Jared to leave; Jared is like his only friend here--Misha totally doesn’t count since he loves his turtles more than people. And if Jared leaves, Jensen won’t be able to ask him out for a coffee and Jared will never fall madly in love with him, they will never have a civil union and a big house with two kids and two dogs and a parrot and Jensen can’t have that. He can’t.
“Well, I don’t know yet. It’s just an idea,” Jared says, shrugging, and Jensen lets out a relieved sigh. It’s just an idea, just like when Jared decided he would become a ballet dancer like Natalie Portman in Black Swan or that time he wanted to buy a giant poncho for Jensen when Jensen told him he loved Mexico.
“It’s a stupid idea. Very, very stupid idea.”
“And why is it a stupid idea?” Jared asked indignant, his arms crossed over his chest and his forehead wrinkled in a cute little frown.
“Because... Because. I want you to go out with me for a coffee,” Jensen answers, feeling suddenly bold just in case Jared actually sticks with this idea for once.
Jared’s smile is blinding. “I thought you’d never ask. Fuck India, let’s go to Starbucks and make out like teenagers. Deal?”
“Deal.”
So yeah, life’s pretty awesome, crappy middle school and rusty trains be damned.

Date: 2011-06-02 07:19 am (UTC)Jared got his priorities straight! Or you know...not so straight...whatever. Point is, I loved this. I would also be okay with rusty trains if I ended up with one of the J's!

WIN!
I loved how you described Jensen's job, and then concluded that he loved the kids anyway, it made me happy. :)

Date: 2011-06-03 01:58 pm (UTC)Anyway, I loved the J2 banter. And Jensen's ideas about Jared's ideas. I totally want more fic about their developing relationship. I get the impression it would be hilarious. And contain turtles.

Why is it that I only ever meet grumpy and unfriendly people on the train? Life is so unfair!
